13 Rivers' is het eerste nieuwe materiaal van Richard Thompson sinds 'Still' uit 2015. Het is ook het eerste album in meer dan tien jaar dat hij zelf geproduceerd heeft. “This has been an intense year for myself and my family,” aldus Thompson. “Getting older doesn’t mean that life gets easier! There are surprises around every bend. I think this reflects in the immediacy of the stories, and the passion in the songs." De dertien nummers op het album zijn opgenomen in Los Angeles met zijn vaste muzikanten Michael Jerome, Taras Prodaniuk en Richards's gitaar technicus Bobby Eichom op tweede gitaar. De nummers zijn analoog opgenomen zonder poespas, om zo tot de kern van de songs te komen. Richard Thompson is één van 's werelds meest geprezen gitaristen en songwriters. Rolling Stone noemde hem in het rijtje van Top 20 gitaristen allertijden. Hij is bovendien één van de oprichters van de Britse Folk-Rock groep Fairport Convention.
